How is polyethylene tarpaulin made?

2024-05-14

First of all, we briefly introduce the production process of polyethylene, polyethylene is the raw material of PE tarpaulin. During petroleum refining, a liquid called naphtha is produced, which is cracked to produce ethylene. Using catalyst, temperature and pressure, ethylene is polymerized into small white polyethylene particles. The high pressure polymerization process can be used to synthesize low density polyethylene (LDPE) and the low pressure process can be used to synthesize high density polyethylene (HDPE). HDPE is used to make toys, shampoo bottles and trash cans, while LDPE can be used to make plastic bags and film packaging.

Most tarp manufacturers buy polyethylene in this granular form first. The HDPE particles are fed into the extrusion line, where the particles are first melted and a polyethylene film is produced, which is then cut and stretched into polyethylene yarn.

The loom then cross-weaves the yarns into a fabric that is resistant to tearing and stretching. A layer of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is then applied to both sides of this fabric to give the tarp a protective sheen, and masterbatches are used in this step to determine the color of the tarp.

The tarp rolls produced in this way will be cut to size, the edges reinforced and welded with rope, and rope loops (rings evenly spaced along the edge of the tarp) added to form the finished product.
